MAY 29th Sat:  “Back Porch Music with George Hamilton IV” ...Grand Old Opry member and musician/singer entertained us as he talked about southern culture and inserted some of his recordings

June 2010

JUNE 8th Tues.  2:00 p.m.:  “Life on the Farm 1900-1940”  Dan and Jean Hunt discussed and demonstrated early farm tools and  equipment before electricity

JUNE 10th Thurs.  2:00 p.m.:    “Matrons of Mercy”  Professor of History, Billy Yeargin, told about the role women played in the Civil War

JUNE 15th Tues. 1:00 p.m.:  (KIDZ)  Shaun Jay in the role of Harry Potter performed walking around magic tricks   

 

JUNE 17th Thurs. 4:00 p.m.:     “Rosemont Winery” –A slide show about this Virginia winery which included a visual tour its historic land and  the winery’s development.   A sample tasting of some of their wines followed the program

JUNE 23rd Wed. 10:00 a.m.:    “Meet Mr. Jefferson”  A one-man performance by Rob Coles, 5th generation grandson of Thomas Jefferson.  It brought to life one of America’s most interesting founding fathers.

JUNE 24th Thurs. 2:00 p.m. “The Lewis and Clark Re-Enactment Expedition, 2004-06” Author, Marcia Tabram Phillips, presented a slide show and lecture of this expedition.

JUNE 25th Fri. 2:00 p.m.:   “Thomas Jefferson:  Brother’s Keeper” Based on the research of playwright and N.C. Humanities Council  Scholar, Karyn Traut, presented a different view of the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings’ story.  Biochemist, Dr. Thomas Traut, followed with an explanation of the DNA study.

JUNE 29th Tues. 2:00 p.m.:    “A Love Affair with Southern Cooking”   Cookbook author, Jean Anderson, discussed her book which was available for sale and signing by the author.

JUNE 30th Wed.  2:00 p.m.:  “Discovering Elvis: Tracing Traditions to the Soul of the King”  Billy Stevens, lecturer/ Musician and N.C. Humanities Council Road Scholar put the social and historic Context of Elvis’ success into perspective and gave us a new understanding of Elvis’ music.

JULY 13th Tues. 11:00 a,m.: (KIDZ) “Animal Adaptations-How Does That Help” a program from the North Carolina Zoo’s Education Department.  We met some of the native species of N.C. animals and find out their special features.

JULY 14th Wed. 11:00 a.m    (KIDZ) “Explore Rhythm” a program from Music Explorium with hands-on drumming.  We made our own musical instruments and learned how instruments make sound.

JULY 15th Thurs. 2:00 p.m.:   “Sea Stories of Sailors Aboard the WWII Battleship North Carolina”   Author, Cindy Ramsey, told poignant stories of this ship and its crew

JULY 21st Wed. 10:00 a.m.:  Shaw School Finger Painting Workshop  – Bryan Carey guided us in the fun and relaxation of native North Carolinian Ruth Faison Shaw’s finger painting techniques

JULY 22 Thurs. 1:00 p.m.:    “Invent –a-Tale” We joined with Claire Ramsey, storyteller extraordinaire, as we invented an exciting tale or two.

JULY 23rd Fri   10:30 a.m.:    “Bat Mania”   Slide show from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science about this misunderstood creature.  No live bats were present.

JULY 24th Sat. 1:00 p.m.:  “The Tobacco Boys of Granville”  Professor of History, Billy Yeargin, focused on the impact Granville County Tobacconists had on the global tobacco trade

JULY 28th Wed. 10:30 a.m.   (KIDZ) “Fossils and Prehistoric Life” (limit  30 children)   A program from the N.C. Museum of Natural Science investigated how fossils were formed and discovered how scientists use them to study animals and the world of the distant past

JULY 29th Thurs. 10:30 a.m.  (KIDZ) “Animals of the Constellations:   A program from the N.C. Museum of Natural Science - We discovered some common animal constellations and learned about legends of the stars in the sky.  We met some of the animals that the legends are based on.

AUGUST 3rd Tues. 10:30 a.m.: (KIDZ) “Tropical Connections” (limit 30 children) A program from the N.C. Museum of Natural Science- Find out North Carolina’s connection to the tropics and how our actions here impact tropical regions.  You will meet some of the museum’s exotic tropical animals

AUGUST 4th Wed. 11:00 a.m. (KIDZ)  “You Can Build it!” A program from Discovery Place – Lean to build bridges and buildings using unique   Kapla Blocks that need no nails or glue to stay in place

AUGUST 5th Thurs. 2:00 p.m.:  “Life as a Moravian in Old Salem:  Keeping the Traditions of the Brethren ”  Author and a N.C. Humanities Council Road Scholar, Marcia Tabrum Phillips, presented a slide show and discussed the Moravians and their history.
